Combining two of life's greatest pleasures, this chocolate coffee recipe is one of our favourite winter warmers.

How to Make a Chocolate Coffee

Chocolate coffee, aka Mocha, is one of our all-time favourite cosy season drinks. The combination of rich espresso and smooth, creamy chocolate makes such an incredible, warming coffee. With a caffeine kick and sweet taste, we like to think of a mocha as an adult's hot chocolate. And there's no shame in that. 

Our chocolate coffee recipe is super easy, but if you have a coffee pod machine it's even easier: we made our own compostable chocolate coffee pods so that you can make a barista-quality mocha at home in seconds. All you have to do is pop one (or two, we don’t judge) in your Nespresso® compatible coffee pod machine, then add some hot, frothy milk steamed in our Milk Frother, and you’ve got yourself an amazing mocha, filled with speciality-grade coffee and rich, creamy chocolate.

So say you don't have a coffee pod machine, or you're using standard coffee pods and not our really, really delicious House Mocha Pods (which means you’re really, really missing out), this is our super simple and speedy recipe for making a café-worthy chocolate coffee at home. 

Chocolate Coffee Ingredients

What you need for one serving: 

  • 40ml freshly brewed coffee (around 18g ground espresso) or one coffee pod (hopefully one of our home-compostable chocolate coffee pods)
  • 250ml milk, or plant-based alternative – we’re huge fans of oat milk in our coffee
  • 1 tsp drinking chocolate / cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional) 
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Chocolate Coffee Recipe

Simple steps to an amazing mocha. 

  1. Brew a shot of espresso using one of our compostable, Nespresso® compatible coffee pods, or freshly brew 40ml coffee using your preferred brewing method (ours is a Cafetière) with our coffee beans or ground coffee
  2. Add the drinking chocolate and sugar and mix well until smooth.
  3. Steam the milk using a Milk Frother so that it has around 5cm of foam on top. Hold the jug 4cm above the cup and pour the milk in slowly. As the volume in the cup increases, bring the jug closer to the surface of the drink. Once the jug is nearly touching the surface of your coffee, tilt to accelerate the rate of pour. This doesn’t just make your drink look extra pretty, but gives it a barista feel. 
  4. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings for an extra special, seriously cosy treat.

How Many Calories in a Chocolate Coffee/Mocha?

Our mocha recipe contains about 170 calories (minus the whipped cream), but this can vary depending on your choice of milk and toppings.
