How to Make an Eggnog Latte
Making this festive favourite has never been easier. This homemade eggnog latte recipe is super simple, so you can enjoy a classic holiday treat without leaving the house.
We love the thick, creamy, custardy flavour of eggnog and it goes so will with a strong and rich espresso, making a Christmassy coffee that's festive, warming, and seriously tasty.
What Is Eggnog?
Great question. We know it sounds a bit gross, but it's actually really delicious. Eggnog is a traditional Christmas drink that's particularly popular in the US and Canada. Also know as "milk punch" (equally gross-sounding), it's a rich, chilled, and sweetened dairy-based drink made with milk, cream, sugar egg yolks, and often whipped egg whites to give it a frothy texture. A distilled spirit like rum, whiskey, brandy, or bourbon is usually added, which is why it's called a "punch".
The word "eggnog" may not sound super appetising, but it's essentially a glorified custard drink that tastes a bit like melted ice cream, with a little bit of booze. We're big fans.
How to Make Eggnog at Home
If you want the full experience and you have the time, it's super easy to make your own eggnog at home—it uses basic ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen already. If you're short on time, you can use store-bought eggnog or advocaat and skip this bit!
Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 350ml whole milk
- 120ml double cream
- 1tsp vanilla extract
- 1tsp ground nutmeg
- 4 egg yolks
- 50g caster sugar
- 100ml bourbon, dark rum, or brandy
Method:
- In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Bring to the boil over a medium heat. Once boiling, remove from the heat.
- In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until thick ribbons form when the whisk is lifted. Slowly whisk the milk and cream mixture until everything is combined and smooth.
- Add your chosen liquor and stir.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Eggnog Latte Ingredients
Now you've made you eggnog, let's get to the good bit. This is everything you need for one serving:
- 1 Grind coffee pod in your favourite blend (our vanilla coffee pods taste amazing in this recipe) or 7g ground coffee to make 35ml espresso
- 100ml milk
- 150ml eggnog or advocaat
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- Pinch of ground cinnamon
How to Make an Eggnog Latte
- Brew one coffee pod using the short shot option on your coffee machine. If using ground coffee, brew a 35ml espresso shot. Pour the espresso into a large mug.
- Steam and whisk the milk until frothy. We'd recommend using a Milk Frother for this.
- Top the espresso with most of the frothy milk, then add the eggnog or advocaat.
- Stir, add the rest of the milk, and sprinkle with ground nutmeg and cinnamon.
